You know you are addicted when…

you wake up at 5:30 in the morning, your house has no power, and your first thought is: how am I going to make my coffee this morning?

God bless my trusty french press. The plan that I had worked out: put on my head lamp, find our lighter, manually light the stove and heat up some water. But the power turned on before I had to execute.

  1. I, too, have often been proud of the fact that, in theory, I could make coffee in some post-apocalyptic (or merely power-less) scenario. But I can grind beans using only the power of my arms — can you?

Sorry you couldn’t live out your caffeine-addicted caveman fantasies, but I’m glad you got your coffee (and power).

  2. Katie pointed out to me last night the flaw in my plan – I had no way to grind the beans. Apparently she also was thinking about how we might make coffee given that the power was out. But she thought it through better than I did and had decided that the beans could be ground with mortar and pestle :) .

  3. I would be fascinated to see you pulverize the beans in that fashion. I appreciate the mortar and pestle, and resorting to that would put my comparatively technological Zassenhaus hand-turned grinder to shame. In response, I might have to take to beating the beans between well-chosen rocks.
